LTU MCS prepares for the 2013 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)

The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) is a 4-day international team contest in Applied Mathematics, held each year near the beginning of February. The teams have a choice of two open-ended applied problems to research and solve, using

mathematics, science, computer, and writing skills. Problems from past years can be found at www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/. Papers are judged in the categories of Outstanding and Finalist, Meritorious, Honorable Mention, and Successful Participant. Currently about 3,500 teams from the USA, China, and a dozen other countries participate.

LTU teams have been competing since 1989; they have done very well due to the varied majors of the participating students. In 2009 we had 3 Meritorious papers out of 5 teams; one team won the Ben Fusaro award for the most creative approach to the problem.

Practice sessions are now being held (practice schedule posted under Upcoming Events). We practice using old contest problems, analyzing good research, writing, math modeling strategies, and teamwork. MCM 2013 runs from January 31 (8:00 pm) to February 4 (8:00 pm). Contact Professors Favro or Zhu for more information (rfavro@ltu.edu, gzhu@ltu.edu).
